If you’ve got an old soul or need help pretending to have one (there’s absolutely no shame in this), we’d like to throw in these live music venues in the mix of your KL nooks for some good, good music.
Alexis Bistro Ampang / KL City Centre
Since 2003, Fridays and Saturdays at this swanky bistro have been dedicated to some of the best jazz performances from a host of local and international musicians. Think Tompi, Barry Cooper, Adibah Noor, and Michael Veerapan. Forget Netflix and chill. Instead, take the lady on an intimate night out at Alexis Bistro Ampang and soak up the best jazzy tunes. We’ll even let you take the credit for this.
No Black Tie / Jalan Nagasari
A music venue first, restaurant second of a space, No Black Tie is a local name that’s synonymous to jazz, as is Colgate to toothpaste. You get the drift. Established more than 10 years ago by pianist Evelyn Hii, No Black Tie has had many big names in jazz grace its stage (read: Kirk Lightsey, Kendraka), along with the privilege of springboarding some of our very own local acts such as Yuna and Reza Salleh. A good break if you’d like something cosy.
The Bee, Publika / Solaris Dutamas
A personal favourite, this is the place if you’re up for something less dressed up, but just as engaging. It plays host to both local and international acts, and even has a bi-monthly poetry open mic night. On days without any live shows, it’s a brilliant place to take a chill pill and feed your belly. Food, you say? Yummy. If you’re not already making a beeline for it (pun intended), we’d suggest you do and take us along!
Bobo KL / Bangsar
Why the name Bobo? We’re just as curious as you are. But what we do know is that Bobo KL is Jalan Bangkung’s resident piano bar, and it’s going to stay in the light for as long as Sean Ghazi plays artistic director to the curation of performances at this storied space.
Playspace LIVE / Damansara
If there’s a collaborative music workspace we all need, it is Playspace. A versatile space for live gigs, live recordings, masterclasses, intimate theatre performances or just a fun creative outlet, these four walls have had within them a host of local and international acts from across a mix of genres. Worth noting is also its founding team - Anthony Yap, and Cathy Chin, who both have impressive resumes studio works and production, and Melina Williams, vocalist, bassist, and composer of rock band Tempered Mental.
